Dr. AJ Eckert, D.O. is Connecticut’s first out non-binary doctor and serves as the Medical Director of Anchor Health’s Gender and Life-Affirming Medicine (GLAM) Program. Dr. Eckert has been involved in LGBTQ healthcare for over fourteen years with seven years’ experience as a provider of primary and preventative care and gender-affirming services, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers.
After Dr. Eckert completed their education at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine and residency at NEOMEN/Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Program-Family, they decided to specialize in LGBTQ health. Dr. Eckert is board-certified in family medicine. They are an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. In addition to being on the board of Connecticut TransAdvocacy Coalition (CTAC), Stonewall Speakers, and more, Dr. Eckert is also a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), CT Gay and Lesbian Chamber (CTGLC), Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and others. They are bilingual in English and Czech.
Dr. Eckert hosts Queering Health with Dr. E, Anchor Health’s bimonthly YouTube and IGTV show, which focuses on demystifying LGBTQ healthcare and promoting the wellness of queer people through open discussions, stories, interviews, and more.
Outside of the office, Dr. Eckert is a classically trained pianist. They are a horror movie buff with their favorites being Halloween (1978) and Phantasm, and they also enjoy queer horror musicals like Phantom of the Paradise. You can also find Dr. Eckert hiking with their dog Lupik (and Anchor Health’s mascot) in their spare time!
